Celebrate World Thinking Day 2024
On February 22nd, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world join hands to celebrate World Thinking Day, a day dedicated to sisterhood, global awareness, and taking action for positive change. This year’s theme, “Our World, Our Equal Future,” emphasizes the collective power of girls and young women to create a more just and equitable world.
History of World Thinking Day
World Thinking Day was first established in 1926 at the 4th Girl Guide/Girl Scout International Conference, held in the United States. It was originally called “Thinking Day” and was created as a way for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to honor the birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouting and Guiding movements, and his wife, Lady Olave Baden-Powell, who was also involved in the movements.
Significance of World Thinking Day
World Thinking Day is a time for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to think about the meaning of Guiding and Scouting, learn about the global community, and take action to make a difference. It encourages young people to be aware of global issues, such as poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability, and to take action to create a better world.
Celebrating World Thinking Day
On World Thinking Day, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world participate in activities and events that promote friendship, advocacy, and fundraising. These activities may include service projects, cultural exchanges, outdoor adventures, and discussions on global issues. Many groups also hold fundraising events to support Guiding and Scouting programs in disadvantaged communities.
Themes and Activities
Each year, World Thinking Day has a theme that focuses on a particular global issue. Recent themes have included “Impact” (2021), “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” (2020), and “Leadership” (2019). Girl Guides and Girl Scouts are encouraged to explore these themes through activities, discussions, and projects that promote understanding, empathy, and action.
